NSW motorists are soon to be hit with a new strategy designed to increase revenue from mobile speed vans. The first six hi tech Ford Territory vehicles will operate from July 19.

The State Government believes an extra $137 million will end up in their coffers.

It is claimed these speeds vans with radar cameras can catch up to six speeding vehicles travelling in either direction every second. This is regardless of weather conditions, day or night with a roof mounted infra red flash invisible to the naked eye. It is planned to park these mobile speed cameras for three hours in locations with a high speed accident history before moving to other areas. It is estimated 1600 more drivers a day could be booked this financial year with an average fine of $211.

“To make this new speeding tax justifiable a small sign on these speed vans reads – ‘Safe Speed Check’ while another sign placed at the roadside informs motorists after the event – ‘Your speed has been checked!’”

As if the cost of living in NSW is the not high enough with electricity prices going through the roof, now the Government is simply revenue raising with this new speeding tax.

NSW roads minister David Borger said he was determined to cut the road toll and mobile speed cameras would help. Last year $62 million was collected from fixed speed cameras in NSW so an extra $137 million from mobile speed vans is like winning lotto.

Based on these figures we are talking $200 million which explains why Macquarie Bank is targeting a takeover bid for Redflex, a company that supplies fixed speed cameras. If budget papers are correct, revenue from fines will almost double from $295 million 2008-09 to $570 million in 2011-12.

No matter which way you look at the maths the NSW Government is on a real winner! To make this new speeding tax justifiable a small sign on these speed vans reads – ‘Safe Speed Check’ while another sign placed at the roadside informs motorists after the event – ‘Your speed has been checked!’

Having mobile speed vans, or as some will say mobile cash registers, motorists will need to spend even more time monitoring their speed. With locations of these speed vans uploaded daily to the RTA website, one wonders how many motorists will use their mobile phones to identify sites. The whole situation with speeding and road carnage raises so many questions.

Like I have said on many occasions, speed does not kill – it’s the impact! Inappropriate speed based on road conditions, the road worthiness of the vehicle and a drivers level of skill are key performance indicators that must be considered along with improved driver education programs. The NSW Government sees motorists as easy targets for taking even more money out of their pockets.

With an election looming, people power will determine their fate which is about as popular as introducing more speed cameras.
